Arizona Cactus Garden, USA
Sandwiched between Stanford University and the Stanford Shopping Center is a little known, largely untouched area, that houses both the Stanford family mausoleium and the Arizona Cactus Garden.
The landscape architect, Rudolph Ulrich, designed the cactus garden which was planed in the late 1880's by the Stanford family, and was to be the backyard garden of their home. However, plans to build the home were abandoned and a half century later, during World War II, garden maintenance was discontinued and up to 80% of the species were lost.
Today, garden restoration has begun with new plantings and some reduction of tree cover, to allow the cacti and succulents much needed sunlight.
